Craft Project: Egg Carton Menorah

The Jewish winter-time celebration of Chanukah is rich with symbols like the dreidel that lend themselves nicely to making holiday crafts. Help your whole family get into the Chanukah spirit by creating this simple craft project.

The menorah, or chanukiah, is an eight-branched candelabra used during Chanukah. Each night, another candle is added until on the 8th night, all eight candles are burning. This fun egg carton craft is a great way for young children to have their own menorah to "light."

Egg Carton Menorah

    What You Need:
  • Empty egg carton
  • Scissors
  • Glue, tape, or stapler
  • Blue and yellow tempera paint
  • Glitter, stickers, etc. for decorating
  • Q-Tips

    What You Do:
  1. Cut the egg carton in half lengthwise to make two strips of six sections each.
  2. Glue or stable the sections together and then cut off nine sections, so that there are nine total sections.
  3. Paint the "menorah" with blue paint. Decorate with glitter, stickers, etc.
  4. Dip the QTips into the yellow paint to make the candles.
  5. Poke one into the top of each section to represent a candle.

Milk Carton Dreidel

The dreidel is a four-sided top with a different Hebrew letter on each side representing the phrase, A Great Miracle Happened There (or Here, if you happen to be living in Israel). While dreidels can be made out of anything, even precious metals, this simple craft project lets you make a useable dreidel at home out of an old milk carton.

Baby Food Jar Menorah Craft

Here is another fun menorah craft, and this one can be used with real tea lights. Be sure to have an adult assist with lighting.

Paper Lanterns

Chanukah is known as the Festival of Lights. This paper lanterns craft is a lovely way to decorate your home for this light-filled holiday.
